SOLID SEMI DETACHED

Semi-detached solid build
Rose garden to the front
Vegetable plot to the back
tended lovingly by the man
who dug for victory.

Small children's space at the side
filled with pansies, nasturtiums,
night scented stock and the dreams
of youth.

Two large bedrooms and a boxroom
Not much cat-swinging there!
A proper hallway, solid wood
banisters, a delight for us
children -
sliding down!

A cool house in summer
but starkly cold in winter
save the blazing lounge fire
carefully ignited with newspaper sticks
and a handful of sugar.

A house built in 1936
before the ugliness of war.
In a peaceful road, tree-avenued
with crab-apple-blossomed beauty
in Spring.

A house filled with children's laughter
later the pain of loss, of beloved kin
and much loved pets.

A place of so many memories.

ENDANGERED

Sleek-striped sinewy beast,
my constant fascination.
To me you are the King
of a far off destination.

In a swamp or jungle deep
nothing can compare.
Your majestic lope prevails,
where others would not dare.

The envy of the fur trade;
your pelt coveted by fools
and a body-part for man's desire
is breaking Nature's rules.

THE RIVER IN SUMMER

Graceful willows line her bank,
branches drifting in the flow.

Regal swans glide softly by,
bright mallards come and go.

Silver ripples in the sunlight
mini whirlpools, crystal clear.

Fish, darting to the surface,
for a welcome morsel here.

Young lovers on the grass
throw in a crumb or two.

I smile, as I remember,
I did the same with you.

The little cafe by the river
still does a thriving trade.

Fresh cream teas and doughnuts
and cakes that are home made.

A rowing boat streaks past,
so powerful, yet serene.

Splash of oars on water,
a splendid summer scene.

Relaxing by the river,
a lovely place to be.

Sights and sounds on water,
simple pleasures and all free!

Hello Ann, :sunny: Just found this section and I'm having a lovely time reading through so many diverse poems, all of them making excellent reading.

Your first one has so many lovely family memories and is full of nostalgia. A wonderful poem indeed. Your second is excellent. Very thought provoking verses describing a magnificent beast. :star3

My favourite however is your third one Ann. I could picture the scene in my mind's eye. It's really beautiful and a delight to read. :hug3
